Laid back. Unspoiled. That's what visitors most often say about our beautiful, emerald island. No hi-rise hotels, not overly commercialized, plenty of open green spaces and our world-famous rum. A true and authentic vacation experience where locals greet you with a warm smile and are eager to share it with you.
Rich in culture and history, St Croix is the largest of the US Virgin Islands. Populated by Arawak and Carib Indians for hundreds of years, Christopher Columbus stumbled across the island on his second trip to the New World in 1493. Since then, seven different flags - Spanish, French, Knights of Malta, Dutch, English, Danish & U.S. - have flown over its lush valleys and rolling hills. This harmonious blend of cultures can be experienced through the island's architecture, art work, food and traditions.
Over the past 500 years, the sugar and rum trade have not only sculpted the culture of the islands, but also its landscape. In its heyday, there were over 165 working sugar mills involved with rum production on St Croix. Today, the ruins of at least 54 sugar mills and historic 18th and 19th-century plantations can be seen rising above the acres of hills and valleys, incorporated into villas and private homes and around every corner. Local neighborhoods still bear the names of the plantations: Rust-op-twist, Betsy's Jewel, Estate Hope, Work and Rest, Judith's Fancy, among others. Touring the "great house" at Whim Plantation and the Cruzan Rum factory (family run for over 200 years) can offer an insight into the island's rich, cultural past. The sugar mill itself has become the symbol of St. Croix prevalent in much of the artwork and jewelry created by local artisans.
St Croix is nick-named the “Twin Cities” for its sister towns of Christiansted and Frederiksted. Both bustling commercial ports during the 18th and 19th centuries, today they feature duty-free shopping. Many will appreciate the distinctive architecture that reflects the many flags that have flown. Christiansted is the only historically preserved 18th-century Danish town and one of the best historically preserved towns in the Caribbean. Downtown features a myriad of chic clothing boutiques, fine handmade jewelry, tropical home goods, casual beachwear, souvenir shops and amazing restaurants - many along the boardwalk featuring views of the harbor.
St Croix is truly a vacationers paradise offering a laid back atmosphere with plenty to do. From hiking or horseback riding through the rainforest to sunbathing on one of our beautiful beaches, you are sure to find an activity to suit your pace. Some of the best snorkeling and scuba-diving is found just off St Croix's shores. On the North-west coast of the island is Cane Bay which features the spectacular Cane Bay wall, a 1500 ft drop, just a short 300yd off shore. You can dive wrecks, reefs, and walls with any of our world-class dive shops. Ask us about a "dive passport" so that you can dive with a few of them at a reasonable cost. Not a diver, but you think you'd like to try? Most dive shops offer a "resort dive" class which will get you diving up to 40ft in just 2 hours. If that hooks you (it did me!) and you decide you'd like to continue with diver certification, this can count as your first dive. There is no better place to get certified than in the crystal blue waters of the Caribbean!

Without a doubt, the most popular activity on St Croix is a visit to Buck Island National Park. Buck Island is a small uninhabited island about 2 miles of the north shore of the island. Spend an afternoon exploring Salt River Bay, the landing spot of Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the New World. Kayak tours of the mangrove-lined shores offer an insight into the history and ecology of the island. St. Croix is also known for its amazing restaurants from casual, open-air to fine- dining establishments. Cruzan rum can be found gracing each bar and it’s always fun to ask the bartender what their signature rum drink is! You can find something for everyone with chefs that specialize in French Cuisine, Mediterranean, Italian, American-fare, Asian-inspired, local West Indian and much more - all with a Caribbean twist. Each April local chefs compete in "A Taste of St Croix" drawing over 1,000 spectators, famous wine purveyors and celebrity chefs like one of the 2008 judges, Rocco DiSpirito. A visit to St. Croix will make you fall in love with the emerald island, its warm people and its relaxed atmosphere. Travelers often comment that St. Croix is their favorite Caribbean island, a hidden jewel still untainted by the overwhelming crowds and the commercialism found on other tropical destinations. We love it and know you will too!

| Frederiksted, located on the west end of the island, has been newly restored to its Victorian-Era splendor with the renovated cruise ship dock, beautiful tree-lined waterfront, restaurants and shopping. With the return of the cruise ships beginning in January of 2009, new businesses are opening and the town should be bustling again. The waterfront is the location for the monthly Sunset Jazz series on the third Friday of each month. Bring a chair or a blanket and enjoy the music and the atmosphere.
